ENVR 305 - Gardens: Then and Now CR: 3.0 Prerequisites: Any 200+ level course in ENVR, AGRI, BIOL, ENGR, HIST, ARAS, or VART, or PHIL 241 or ENCW 206 and instructor permission. Students will explore the history and contemporary design and use of gardens having a wide range of purposes, including ornamentation/decoration, food production, pollinator/wildlife habitat, water management, urban climate change mitigation, commemoration/celebration, and therapy/health. Students will spend a significant time engaged in hands-on activities in the SBC community garden and other on-campus growing areas, and hence will “get dirty” and encounter insects while working in various weather conditions. This course will typically align with Virginia Historic Garden Week; students should plan for multiple all-day field trips (and potentially an overnight) during the course.
